The Box House, The Desert Home, affectionately the ‘Cave House’ brief was a home situated in a hot, arid, dry and dusty environment.
The 215㎡, 4 bedroom home would be a temperature cool cave, avoiding wood as a material as it is has a warm property we used dark cool cave colours and stone cold properties using stone and porcelain tiles.
The sliding panels wrap around the house allowing the patios to be enclosed in shade out of the glaring sun.
The mood board for the interior design reflects the choice of stone, light white porcelain in couches. The slim metal framed light and cool dining table in the same dark and cool shade of blue as the final interior colour scheme. Smaller elements of wood were added to the mood board to warm and soften in the form of dining chairs, bench and flooring.
The interior architecture on the plans show two living rooms, one private and the other public, separated by a wood fireplace and chimney. An internal patio allows access from outside to the master bedroom with ensuite.
Two design style proposals for the kitchen were created and the final decision went to the simpler and cooler colours of the dark blue ceiling and blue stone with gold stripe wall covering with matching table top in keeping with the cool theme.
The second choice of using white for the ceiling and walls, wood panels and a green colour dining table shows the power of colour psychology.
In both cases a splash of colour in the orange as a complementary colours for the dining chairs.
The public living room is in a very ‘masculine’ home office meeting room style.
The master bedroom continues the masculine touch reflecting the dry and arid conditions outside the house. The austere bedroom is enriched with wallpaper using the outdoor colour palette of sand, dust, dark shadow also chosen in the wardrobe and side table.
The ensuite bathroom has a full skylight, allowing the abundant natural daylight in. Stone and marble carry through the cool cave concept. Using hi-tec waterproof bathroom wallpaper with a glass window effect gives the impression of being in a tropical jungle. The glass door to the bedroom matches perfectly the wallpaper design.
The kids bedroom. A space for twins.
A large window provides a bright, light and airy room as a departure from the rest of the ‘cave’. The kids bedroom has space and light to study using the same feature blue and orange colours against the softer and warmer wood floor.
